More than 1.3 million N.J. residents will be eligible to use a free, electronic IRS tax return filing program, Direct File, starting in 2025. The tool launched in 2024 as a pilot program in 12 states and available to people with W-2 income or tax credits and deductions. While it will not include filing for state taxes, N.J. taxpayers can use the state’s separate, free filing tool for state returns. The federal tax filing program will be available in English and Spanish.
