South Orange police department has a medicine drop box available outside the police station. Expired or unused medication can be discarded at the drop box at any time of day.

Free virtual author talk with Brea Baker planned by Newark library on Jul. 31. Baker will discuss “Rooted: The American Legacy of Land Theft and the Modern Movement for Black Land Ownership” at 6 p.m. Registration is required.

Outdoors On Purpose seeks donations to support people in Jamaica affected by Hurricane Beryl. Food, medical aid, and construction materials among other donations are accepted online. In-person donations are accepted Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 394 Coit St. in Irvington. Food collection ends Aug. 16.

New Jersey artists can apply for Newark Liberty Airport’s digital art exhibit by Aug. 26. Artists should submit up to two work examples following a N.J. theme. Artists receive a $1,000 stipend. Applications available online.

Tickets available for Arc of Essex County’s 2024 Golf Classic fundraising event scheduled for Sep. 16 in West Orange. Registration includes lunch, round of golf, awards, and beverage cart service among other features. Tickets available online for purchase. Proceeds from the event will support The Arc of Essex County’s programs.

Urban farming in Essex County can improve local food access. Farms provide local produce in and around the county’s seven food deserts through donation or subsidy. But they often have to overcome a lack of municipal, state, and federal support to continue operating. The Jersey Bee found that these challenges are rooted in systemic inequality, further limiting the potential of one solution to food inequity.
