Newark students, help us make a “Student’s Guide to School Board Elections” at our free community journalism workshop this August

The Jersey Bee is hosting a free youth media workshop at Rutgers-Newark for Newark high school students entering grades 11-12 who want to learn about community journalism and produce writing or other media to help their classmates vote.

The in-person workshop is Aug. 12-16. Participants will learn community media skills and produce a “Student’s Guide to School Board Elections” for Newark residents age 16+ now eligible to vote in school board elections.

The deadline to apply has been extended to Aug. 1 and admission is rolling.

Participants will learn from local journalists at The Jersey Bee and other area news organizations about how to identify relevant community issues and produce media that addresses community information needs.

Topics you’ll learn about include:

• The importance of community media.
• How to conduct research.
• How to interview.
• How to collaborate with other media makers.

In addition, participants will tour Rutgers-Newark to learn about student life on campus and visit the NJ Spotlight News studios in Newark to learn about the television station and digital news outlet.

All students who complete the workshop will receive an author credit in the “Student’s Guide to School Board Elections”, which will be published by The Jersey Bee and other media outlets.

This free workshop is open to Newark high school students entering grades 11 and 12 who are interested in journalism, news reporting, writing, media production, or community engagement.

Here’s what you’ll do:

• Attend classes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Aug. 12-16.
• Learn about community media production while you create a school board election guide for voters your age.
• Learn from and collaborate with professional journalists who will guide you through the process.

Eligibility:

This program is open to Newark students entering grades 11-12 and who will be age 16-19 by Aug. 11. Participants must be available for the entire workshop.

The deadline to apply has been extended to Jul. 1 and admission is rolling.

Applicants under 18 can submit an application but must receive their parent or guardian’s permission to be considered. Submit your parent or guardian’s name, email, and phone number in your application and The Jersey Bee’s staff will send them a short form to verify your eligibility.

Location:

Attendees will spend four days at Rutgers-Newark and one day at NJ Spotlight studios in Newark.

Transportation:

Both locations are accessible by bus. Free bus tickets will be available for students who request them.
