South Orange and Maplewood plan 2024 Lavender Graduation for LGBTQIA+ and allied high school seniors on Jun. 13 in Maplewood. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. and will include a speech from keynote speaker Cathy Renna, the the National LGBTQ Task Force’s communications director. Registration is required by May 30. Add to 📅.

Frank Sanchez, the currently suspended principal of Columbia High School facing charges of simple assault and child endangerment, will not be renewed for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. Sanchez will remain on administrative leave until Jun. 30, after which he will cease to be an employee of the district, according to district spokesperson Paul Brubaker. The position for high school principal has been listed as “available” on the school district website since May 10.

Affordable housing applications are open for two Maplewood properties. Applications accepted online for 1722 Springfield Avenue and The Gleason. Preliminary applications must be submitted by phone, email, or online by Jul. 8. Priority will be given to Essex County residents and workers. West Orange Arts Council seeks artist submissions for its “Juneteenth Joy: Unchained” exhibition. All works must be wired and dropped off by Jun. 1. Essex County Parks plans a free fishing derby for youth under age 15 on May 23 in Caldwell. The event is from 5-7:30 p.m. at Grover Cleveland Park. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles, bait, and chairs. There is no rain date. Prizes will be awarded. Add to 📅.

New Jersey voters will elect their next 10th congressional district representative during a special Jul. 16 primary. Twelve candidates filed to fill the late Rep. Donald Payne Jr.’s former seat, including LaMonica McIver, Derek Armstead, Jerry Walker, Brittany Claybrooks, Darryl Godfrey, Shana Melius, Sheila Montague, Debra Salters, Alberta Gordon, John Flora, Eugene Mazo, and Carmen Bucco. The 10th congressional district serves East Orange, Irvington, Montclair, Newark, Orange, and West Orange, among other municipalities in Hudson and Union Counties. A special general election is scheduled for September. The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of Payne’s term which ends in January 2025.
