Local news
West Orange will be flushing fire hydrants starting May 12. Hydrant flushing is from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. through May 24 and will affect all West Orange streets. Residents may experience low water pressure or discolored water.

West Orange public schools and Music Village plan “Love and Unity Fest” May 13-18. There will be live music, food trucks, and activities for families. A complete list of events and registration available online. Add to 📅.

West Orange recreation is accepting 2024 Hoop Dreams Basketball Camp enrollment for residents in grades K-5 and girls in grades 6-8. The program is weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the West Orange High School Tarnoff Gym. WOHS Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Caniece Williams will lead the program where participants will practice drills, games, and visit the town pool.

East Orange YMCA is accepting Juneteenth pop-up shop vendor applications from Black-owned businesses. The event is scheduled for Jun. 13 at the South Mountain YMCA from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Clothing, jewelry, and food vendors welcome. Applications available online.

Maplewood postpones its Small Wonder Marketplace event to May 12. There will be more than 80 vendors, including artists, retailers, and restaurants on Maplewood Avenue, Highland Place and Baker Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Add to 📅.

South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race to host “Disinformation and the Fight for Racial Equality” conversation on May 14 in South Orange. The event is from 7-9 p.m. at Congregation Beth El. N.J. Department of Environmental Protection recently introduced a draft action plan to address extreme heat as the state experienced its third-hottest summer in 2022. It compiles 133 actions in 20 focus areas, subdivided into five priorities. Those include: building build healthy and resilient communities, strengthening N.J.’s agricultural practices, promoting coordinated governance, increasing public understanding, and promoting climate-informed investments.
