Regional news

Federal intelligence officials can now access electronic data of American citizens without a warrant after a surveillance program expansion was signed into law in April. This recent amendment gives the federal government the ability to demand data from any business that provides WiFi and from communication companies like Verizon or Google. Created in 2008, the program has historically led to increased surveillance of Muslim communities, including in northern N.J. This amendment has raised significant concern for privacy abuses — especially for marginalized groups and protesters. During a recent year-long period, FBI officials violated search rules more than 278,000 times when looking through collected data.
