Columbia High School to host a free “Maker Madness” for youth on Apr. 27 in Maplewood. There will be more than 25 STEAM stations for hands-on learning from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Add to 📅.
Achieve Foundation of South Orange and Maplewood
SOPAC to host a free “Shifted Construction Plate: Book Launch” on Apr. 30 in South Orange. The event, scheduled from 6:30 p.m., will feature artist Mikel Frank displaying his paintings alongside poet Judith Christian reading the inspired poems. Both the paintings and poems are presented in the book. A Q&A session will follow the reading. Books will be available for purchase. Add to 📅.

Donald Payne Jr., a N.J. congressman and Newark resident, died at the age of 65. Payne served the state’s 10th Congressional District since 2012. He represented East Orange, Irvington, Montclair, Newark, Orange, and West Orange, among other municipalities. He was hospitalized earlier this month after a heart attack.

United Park as One to host “Environmental Justice Community Engagement Session” for Essex County residents in-person at the Newark library Main Branch and virtually on Apr. 30. The session is from 6-7:30 p.m. and will discuss environmental justice issues in the county. Residents and community groups will meet state environmental protection senior staff. New Jersey is set to open the Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park this summer in Mantua. The $73 million dinosaur fossil park and museum is built on a former marl quarry where a large number of Mesozoic Era marine and terrestrial fossils have been discovered. Rowan broke ground on the project in 2021 and, it has already unearthed over 50,000 cataloged fossils, ranging from reptilian mosasaurs to sharks and clams. Visitors will dig for fossils and can keep what they find as souvenirs.
