SOPAC to host a free “Shifted Construction Plate: Book Launch” on Apr. 30 in South Orange. The event, scheduled from 6:30 p.m., will feature artist Mikel Frank displaying his paintings alongside poet Judith Christian reading the inspired poems. Donald Payne Jr., a N.J. congressman and Newark resident, died at the age of 65. Payne served the state’s 10th Congressional District since 2012. He represented East Orange, Irvington, Montclair, Newark, Orange, and West Orange, among other municipalities. He was hospitalized earlier this month after a heart attack.

New Jersey is set to open the Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park this summer in Mantua. The $73 million dinosaur fossil park and museum is built on a former marl quarry where a large number of Mesozoic Era marine and terrestrial fossils have been discovered. Rowan broke ground on the project in 2021 and, it has already unearthed over 50,000 cataloged fossils, ranging from reptilian mosasaurs to sharks and clams. Visitors will dig for fossils and can keep what they find as souvenirs.
