Regional news

N.J. Transit riders might face a 15% increase in fares starting this summer if approved by the state Legislature. State officials attribute the fare increase, which is N.J. Transit’s first in nine years, to a projected budget shortfall from a four-year forecast that could reach $957 million July 2026, and advocates against the hike say that a fare increase will not close that gap or support necessary transit improvement projects. N.J. Transit’s board of directors approved the increase last Wednesday as well as an annual 3% hike starting in 2025. N.J. Transit is also set to cancel its FlexPass program offering one-way tickets at a discounted rate.
