West Orange Mayor Susan McCartney defended her decision to retain long-standing Township Attorney Richard Trenk in court, following the town council’s attempt to vote him out. McCartney sued the council in September 2023, claiming they were encroaching on her executive power as granted by the Faulkner Act. This comes after the council’s resolution to dismiss Trenk, whose law firm has been working with the town without a contract and earning $500,000 over the last 15 months, according to Town Council President Bill Rutherford. He maintains that the interim decision does not vindicate McCartney’s legal challenge and awaits the final ruling.
