Glen Ridge library plans its monthly virtual author talks event starting Feb. 8. Tessa Bailey will discuss her book “Fangirl Down” at 8 p.m. There will be an interactive Q&A session after the discussion. Recordings of the talk will be available to library card holders. Essex County activated Code Blue procedures from Feb. 5 to Feb. 7, helping people find shelter as temperatures drop below 32 degrees. The Essex County Board of County Commissioners celebrated Muslim Heritage Month on Jan. 25. Muslim Essex County residents were celebrated for their significant contributions to the community. Honorees include Jimmy Swall, President of the Muslim League of Voters in New Jersey an East Orange resident. Hassan Abdus-Sabur, founder of the HBCU Scholarship Bike Ride, Younis Moheisen, Owner of Kings Family Restaurant and Catering, both Newark residents. Baseemah Annette Beasley, Chairwoman of the Irvington Democratic Committee. A moment of silence was also held in honor of Imam Hassan Sharif of the Masjid Muhammad-Newark mosque, who was killed on Jan. 3.

New Jersey lawmakers will receive a 67% salary increase, boosting their pay from $49,000 to $82,000, following legislation signed by Gov. Phil Murphy. The governor’s salary will also increase from $175,000 to $210,000, effective 2026, post Murphy’s final term. The raise, first in over two decades, was justified by some lawmakers as necessary to keep up with inflation and rising costs.
