Newark schools district and its teachers’ union have begun negotiations for a new contract, which will be the second contract since the state ended its 23-year takeover of the district in 2018, and the third negotiated under Superintendent Roger León. The 2019 contract notably ended salary commensurate with student performance and resumed pay based on experience and education. Negotiations are set to continue every Thursday until a deal is reached, and with the goal to improve teachers’ working conditions, according to union president John Abeigon.
