Regional news

State inspectors found Essex County Correctional Facility in non-compliance with a stipulation that requires inmate welfare funds be spent to their benefit. Monies designated for recreation equipment, books, movies, and the law library were instead used for individual LexisNexis accounts and the washing machines. Most N.J. county jails lack oversight and have received commendation from inspectors despite evidenced violations that led to lawsuits, investigations, and arrests of correctional staff.
