Newark city council unanimously passed the initiative to allow 16- and 17-year olds to vote in school board elections. Newark becomes the largest U.S. city to expand voting rights to people under 18 since 1971. Recent school board elections had low voter turnout, with about 3% of Newark’s registered voters participating in last year’s election.
