Peshine Avenue School seeks winter apparel donations for its 2023 “Christmas Drive” through Dec. 15 in Newark. Donations of hats, mittens, scarves, gloves, and socks can be dropped off at 433 Peshine Ave.

Newark City Council approved an additional zoning board to streamline the current backlog of development applications on Nov. 21. The board, consisting of seven regular members and up to four alternates, can accept applications for up to one year, and the city may extend that time if necessary, according to a 2019 state law. This approval follows a controversial land use measure that loosens development restrictions in Newark.

The new Cherry Blossom Welcome Center opened in Branch Brook Park. The 12,000-square-foot building includes a large community room, gallery and display cases, and a mural depicting the history of the cherry blossoms in the park. There is also an imitation cherry blossom tree for visitors to experience year-round. Other improvements included newly planted trees and water fountains and updated athletic fields

Newark LGBTQ Community Center is accepting film submissions for the “2024 Newark LGBTQ Film Festival.” The final deadline to submit is Feb. 16. Feature length films, short films, documentaries, and experimental projects will be considered. Apply online.

N.J. Performing Arts Center to host “Decolonizing Arts Education” workshop for educators Dec. 6. The webinar begins at 3:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to remove colonial practices from teaching and learning, and work on decolonizing methods to apply to their learning spaces. A professional development certificate can be requested. Admission is on “pay what you can” basis.

La Casa de Don Pedro plans enrollment event for N.J. FamilyCare, a free and low-cost healthcare program, for individuals under age 19 in Irvington on Dec. 9 and 16. Registration will be at Irvington library, 5 Civic Square, and open to families regardless of immigration status. Families must bring the child’s birth certificate, proof of income and address, and passports.

Cornerstone Montclair to host 2023 “Sensory and Autism Friendly Santa” event Dec. 9 where a limited number of children visit Santa at a time. Parents and caregivers must bring their own cameras for photos. Preregistration is required. Add to 📅.

New Jersey residents can now have beer and wine delivered to their homes by DoorDash and Instacart after state regulators approved the companies’ permits. Deliveries are limited to residences and are not allowed on college campuses, hotels, or BYOB restaurants. Drivers are required to verify the purchaser’s age and ID, and contactless deliveries are not permitted.

Montclair State University has launched the first “Teacher Certification Apprenticeship Program” in New Jersey. The program allows current paraprofessionals to become teachers by offering them the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree and teacher certification. Wayne Township Public Schools is the first district to partner with the university.
