Newark City Council approved an additional zoning board to streamline the current backlog of development applications on Nov. 21. The board, consisting of seven regular members and up to four alternates, can accept applications for up to one year, and the city may extend that time if necessary, according to a 2019 state law. This approval follows a controversial land use measure that loosens development restrictions in Newark.
