Essex County College is accepting students for its spring 2024 semester. Late registration and the first day of classes are held Jan. 10. Prospective students can register online.

Maplewood police officer Chian Weekes-Rivera files suit against township, police department and captain alleging violation of state laws against discrimination on the basis of hair. Weekes-Rivera wore her hair in Bantu knots, a traditional African hairstyle and her and her supervisors were reprimanded for it. Maplewood’s township committee ordered the police department to review its policies to ensure compliance with the law.

U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “plant hardiness zone map” shows 2.5 degree Fahrenheit warming trend across U.S. in last 11 years. New Jersey gardeners are more likely to experience warmer extreme minimum temperatures, changing which plants can be grown outdoors. Essex County has warmed by one zone, with extreme minimum temperatures up to 10 degrees warmer.
