Nutley Family Services Bureau to give away Thanksgiving dinner food baskets to qualifying residents Nov. 20-22. Food baskets will be distributed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 21 and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov 22.

Nutley Soccer Booster Club to host a 2023 alumni game for former Nutley High School soccer players and coaches Nov. 24. The game starts at 10 a.m. at Glotzbach Field. A $25 admission fee is required. Add to 📅.

West Orange’s Gregory Cares Committee seeks donations of non-perishable food for the 2023 “Gregory Neighborhood Food Drive” through Nov. 30. Items will be donated to the Holy Trinity-West Orange Food Pantry. Drop off pantry donations of pasta, cereal, and peanut butter and jelly at 7 Dartmouth Rd. Other donations can be made online.

Montclair Inn, a retirement community, seeks volunteers to serve Thanksgiving dinner to seniors on Nov. 23. Assistance is needed from 1-5 p.m. in Montclair. Student volunteers will receive community service hours. Volunteers can sign up through email or by phone.

Montclair’s Riskin Children’s Center, a mental health service, to host a three-part creative arts workshop for children age 12-14 on Mondays from Nov. 27. to Dec. 11. The program will be held at The Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris in Montclair from 5-6 p.m. Participants will explore self-expression and positive self-esteem while being guided by a licensed counselor and art therapist. West Orange’s Maria Vera is projected win the 2023 election for the West Orange Board of Education’s open seat. Vera received twice as many votes as incumbent candidate Melina Huerta. Vera will be sworn in at the board’s reorganization meeting in January.

Bloomfield mayor Michael Venezia and Newark school principal, Belleville resident Carmen Morales are projected to win the 2023 general election for N.J. State Assembly in the 34th district. That includes Belleville, Bloomfield, East Orange, Glen Ridge, Nutley and Orange. Assemblywoman Britnee Timberlake is projected to win her election for the district’s state senate seat.

Newark’s A’Dorian Murray-Thomas elected to Essex County Board of Commissioners in 2023 general election. Murray-Thomas will represent District 2, including Newark’s South Ward, parts of Newark’s Central Ward, Irvington and Maplewood. Murray will resign from her position on the Newark school board and be sworn in as commissioner in January 2024.

Newark library to offer a virtual, beginner-level negotiations skills course through LinkedIn Learning. Management trainer Chris Croft will teach the program. This event is available to library cardholders and participants will earn a certificate at the end of the course.

Newark’s Central Planning Board approved N.J. Performing Arts Center’s plan to construct a three-story arts education and community center across the street from its main building on Center St. at it Oct. 30 meeting. NJPAC’s attorney says construction will start in the first half of 2024 and the center will open by the end of 2025.

East Orange YMCA is accepting applications for their free preschool program for children age 3-4. Children must have an East Orange address and age 3 or 4 by Oct. 1, 2023.

Maplewood police seeks volunteers for the Domestic Violence Response Team. Volunteers will receive training to provide information and referrals for obtaining temporary restraining orders, find shelter or other support services, and help with creating a safety plan. Volunteers must submit to a background check and fingerprinting, be age 21+, and have transportation. Notice of interest can be given to the domestic violence liaison at the Maplewood Police Department by phone or email.

N.J. Arts Council is accepting applications for its 2025 “Folk and Traditional Arts Project” grant. Interested applicants can attend a free session to learn more about the application process Nov. 21. This grant program is designed for mid-career artists and the deadline to apply is Dec. 12 at 12 p.m.
