Irvington plans 2023 Veterans Day Remembrance Ceremony on Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. outside the Fire Department building on Springfield Ave. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony. Add to 📅.

Seton Hall University’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity offering donation-based leaf raking in fall 2023. Students will rake yard leaves on Nov. 11, 12, 18, and 19 for a donation to the organization. All donations will go towards funding the organization’s trip to construct a home outside of New Jersey. Leaf ranking can be booked through email.

South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint assistant superintendent Kevin Gilbert to acting superintendent. The vote came after the board voted 6-3 to place superintendent Ronald Taylor on leave. The board alleged Taylor underperformed in his role. He and other Black men who worked closely with the board described the board as unwelcoming environment for Black men.

Newark Teachers Union filed a lawsuit after the district denied a public records request releasing a review of cultural, religious, and racial dynamics at city’s School of Global Studies. Newark NAACP and other community members have previously demanded the release of the full report, which was commissioned after students spoke publicly in 2022 about racial harassment on campus. Some report recommendations included assessing effects of “anti-Blackness” on the school system and fostering conversations about racial issues. The district alleges the documents are draft or advisory and exempt from public record requests.

New Jersey Council for the Humanities plans “From Military Trauma to Healing through Creative Arts,” a free in-person event at Newark Public Library on Nov. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will include a conversation with former military chaplain James Yee, a Warrior Writers info session, and “Bridge Back Home from War,” a poetic theater performance. Applications are open for Newark’s affordable housing development initiative. The “Equitable Investments in Newark Communities” initiative seeks proposals from contractors, developers, and non-profits to acquire, manage, construct, rehabilitate, and maintain housing. Most available properties are in the West and South wards. A pre-submission Q&A will be held on Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Nov. 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Applications are due Dec. 18.
