West Orange writer Arielle Dance won two awards The BookFest 2023 virtual literary festival. Their book, “Dearest One,” received first place in “Diversity and Multicultural Children’s Fiction and second in “Family Children’s Fiction.”

South Orange library has set up a designated writing space available for community members participating in “National Novel Writing Month” in November.

Mental Health Association plans “Photo Voice: Moments in Time” art exhibit reception on Nov. 2. The event is from 5-7 p.m. at Montclair Public Library. The art exhibit will feature photography from local residents who participated in a workshop over the summer to capture their experiences of time, acceptance, freedom, and possibilities. Associated Humane Society Newark Branch plans “Santa Paws Pet Photo Fundraiser” on Nov. 4. The event will be from 12-4 p.m. For a $20 fee, pets will have a 10-minute photo session with Santa. All proceeds for the event will go towards caring for shelter animals. Photos will be sent via email and uploaded on the shelter’s Facebook. Rutgers Law School plans to revive and expand women’s rights legal clinic founded in 1970s by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The school is using a charitable donation to re-establish the office at its Newark campus and launch an extension in Camden.
