Bloomfield Info Project expands food access news services, aiming to reduce food insecurity near Bloomfield Center

The Bloomfield Info Project is a needs-based news organization. And among the greatest needs in our community is access to essential products and services. That’s because – even before the pandemic – one in three Essex County households struggled to afford things like food, housing, transportation, health care, child care, and basic technology, according to an analysis from United Way.

It’s a problem in our community and everywhere else. We can’t fix it all, but we can try to bridge information gaps that keep people from accessing the resources already available to them where they live.

That’s why the Bloomfield Info Project made food access a critical service area when we launched. 

We recently completed a 16-month initiative providing weekly support for food distributions in the Third Ward to identify information gaps between the community and service providers. And during that time, we launched our English-Spanish food access alerts that now serve a growing number of households weekly.

Now our latest effort to help people access food resources in their community is near Bloomfield Center. 

So we’re looking for people living near Bloomfield Center – between approximately Baldwin Street in the North to Newark Ave in the South – to help us distribute flyers letting people know about food assistance available in the neighborhood.
