Our statement on the Jan. 6 attempted coup in Washington, D.C.

We normally avoid reporting national news because it’s usually not useful for day-to-day life in Bloomfield. But after the Jan. 6 events in Washington, D.C., we want you to know you’re not alone.

We normally avoid reporting national news because it’s usually not useful for day-to-day life in Bloomfield. But today a violent mob supported by President Trump and a significant proportion of his party’s elected officials stormed the Capitol Building in an attempted coup seeking to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election.

As of this writing, it’s being reported that the insurrectionists have been cleared from the Capitol grounds and Congress plans to return to the Capitol to finish the counting of Electoral College votes. As it should – democracy should not waiver against fascism.

The Bloomfield Information Project is a local organization but our work is aligned with all those who seek to achieve full freedom and democracy for all. Oppression is not welcome in our community. White supremacy is not welcome.

You’re not alone if you’re disturbed by today’s events. Know that there are movements in Bloomfield and across the country working to expand democracy – not just maintain the status quo. We can build a better world. And in Bloomfield, we’re doing it.
